August 4, 2008

Here’s a look at Go Hero’s insanely awesome 1/6 Scale Buck Rogers figures. They come in two color ways and feature a sound chip that can play mp3 files of classic Buck Rogers radio shows (or your Lil Wheezy CDs if you feel like it).

Hipsters…like Rome?

August 4, 2008

Adbusters #79 (that wicked expensive psychology magazine with no ads) is just hitting newstands. It features the essay – “Hipster: The Dead End of Western Civilazation” – an insightful analysis of Hipster culture.

Each successive decade of the post-war era has seen it smash social standards, riot and fight to revolutionize every aspect of music, art, government and civil society.

But after punk was plasticized and hip hop lost its impetus for social change, all of the formerly dominant streams of “counter-culture” have merged together. Now, one mutating, trans-Atlantic melting pot of styles, tastes and behavior has come to define the generally indefinable idea of the “Hipster.”

An artificial appropriation of different styles from different eras, the hipster represents the end of Western civilization – a culture lost in the superficiality of its past and unable to create any new meaning. Not only is it unsustainable, it is suicidal. While previous youth movements have challenged the dysfunction and decadence of their elders, today we have the “hipster” – a youth subculture that mirrors the doomed shallowness of mainstream society.

So run out now and buy the issue click here and read it.

The Dark Knight vs. The Unsinkable

August 4, 2008

Everyone needs to slow their role. TDK is only about $300 million away from toppling Titanic as the highest grossing movie of all time. But not really. As much as I want to see that happen, you have to remember that 11 years ago when DiCaprio held Winslet over his head, there was no IMAX (around $20 a ticket) and tickets cost around half of what they do today. So technically TDK needs to break the $900 million mark to beat Titanic’s $600 million mark.

I’m cool with TDK knocking Star Wars out of the number two slot.

Depp, Hoffman, Jolie = Dark Knight Villainy

August 4, 2008

The Telegraph reports that producers of the next Batman film are vying for Johnny Depp and Philip Seymour Hoffman to be in the next film as the Riddler and the Penguin.

“Producers are convinced that the role of The Riddler is perfect for Depp. Johnny’s a pro. He’ll be able to take direction and still make the character his own. And what better Penguin is there than Philip Seymour Hoffman?” a source said.

They could be joining Angelina Jolie – the actress is reported to be after the role of Catwoman.

I’m all for this, especially Hoffman. That dude is scary good in everything he does. (See The Savages and Before the Devil Knows Your Dead for the pudding). But can he really do a better job than DeVito did in 1992’s Batman Returns? They’ll probably slick the character up instead of making him look like a rotten egg a la DeVito.

Selina Kyle/Catwoman will be a nice addition to the new franchise; providing Bruce Wayne a complex romantic interest and providing male fans of the franchise a boner.
