New DirecTV Ad: Cute Homage? Or Pure Distastefulness?

It’s common knowledge that DirecTV has a history of taking famous movie scenes, and swapping one of the actors with an up-to-date version of them.  Normally these advertisements are slightly comical.  But how do we all feel about them using the late/great Chris Farley, or any other actor/actress that has gone on to the next world?

Personally, I think the adds are awesome.  They found at least one major star from the film they’re using, then get the actor/actress to address the viewers in pure Zack Morris style.  On top of that, DirecTV is just trying to sell a product in a cleaver way.  After all, who doesn’t like Tommy Boy?  Or even Poltergeist, for that matter?  Apparently YouTube.  From Yahoo:

“Some viewers are upset with DirecTV’s newest commercial, a recreation of a scene in “Tommy Boy” that combines new footage of David Spade interacting with Chris Farley, who died of a drug overdose in 1997. In the classic scene from the 1995 comedy, a present-day Spade dismisses Farley’s antics with the sarcastic remark, “Never gets old.” Viewers on YouTube called the spot “distasteful” and a “stupid idea.”

Take a look at some of the other stars who delved into their old rolls to get you to buy DirecTV.

Craig T. Nelson: Poltergeist

William Shatner: Star Trek

Christopher Lloyd: Back to the Future

Kathy Bates: MISERY

Robert Patrick: Terminator 2

Sigourney Weaver: Aliens

Should DircTV quit using kick ass movie scenes with dead stars in them?  What are your thoughts?

The ads are awesome. They make me glad that the quality films of yore are still recognized and not just disposed of. There is nothing distasteful about using deceased actors in these ads, because after all, they are only using existing scenes. They arent disgracing the actors who are in them. If anything, they are being brought back into the public eye. Is this bad? I don’t think so.
