“THIRTEEN TREASURES OF ANCIENT TIME, THIRTEEN LESSONS OF RULE IN RHYME. TO FIND THE JEWELS IN SECRET PLACES, FOLLOW WHERE THE COMPASS FACES. IF RETURNED FROM THE SHORE BEYOND, A NEW DAY DAWNS FOR OCTOPON. BUT IF THEY FALL INTO EVIL HANDS, DARKNESS DESCENDS ON ALL THE LANDS. FOR THESE RICHES TWO SHALL VIE, IN THE REALM OF DARK WATER WHERE TREASURES LIE.”
Prophecies kick ass. Weather they be foretelling cataclysmic doom, making right what once went wrong, or the rise of an evil warlord hellbent on world domination, you are guaranteed a heart pounding journey. Prophecy is also the driving force behind the cartoon I have picked for today. Chalk full of battling pirates, thrilling chases on the raging seas, hungry beasts with razor sharp fangs, and a monkey-bird who’s appetite has no ends…it’s high adventure with The Pirates of Dark Water.
The early ’90’s introduced us to Ren, the young prince of Octopon who is destined to purge the world of the evil Dark Water. In order to do so, Ren must collect the 13 treasures of Rule before the evil Pirate Lord Bloth gets his slimy hands on them. Joining Ren on this quest is Niddler the Monkey-Bird, Tula the ecomancer (she can manipulate nature stuffs), and Ioz the money hungry pirate who reminds me of an early animated Sawyer.

Due to expensive production costs and failing to meet the airdates, the series was never completed, ending abruptly after 21 episodes with only eight of the thirteen treasures collected. Noi Gi-Tat! What a sad thing to happen to such an amazing show. If you ask me, this is one of the greats that needs to be rejuvinated and finnished properly. I have spent many a time wondering what it would’ve been like had Ren gathered all 13 treasures. Sure it would have the given happy-dappy ending that is to be expected, but I think seeing the obliteration of the gigantic Dark Dweller would be one for the books. Untill that time comes I will be resting comfortably knowing that there still exists 21 killer episodes to blow my mind with. \m/
